Experimental production and field trial of a combined autogenous Bordetella bronchiseptica (Ferry) Moreno-Lopez and Pasteurella multocida (Lehmann and Neumann) Rosenbusch and Merchant Bacterin in a commercial piggery farm

Atrophic rhinitis is a multifactorial disease caused by the combined action of Bordetella bronchiseptica and toxigenic Pasteurella multocida responsible for the production of turbinate atrophy. An autogenous, whole cell bacterin was experimentally produced containing Phase I B. bronchiseptica and toxigenic P. multocida Type A causing atrophic rhinitis in a commercial piggery farm. The study was conducted in three parts, the isolation and characterization of the isolates, development of the combined bacterin and safety and pathogenicity test done in mice and assessment of the efficacy of the bacterin based on the reduction of clinical signs, weight gain and determination of immune responses by antibody level detection using serological tests. Frequency of clinical signs of AR was reduced in the vaccinated group as compared to the unvaccinated group. Litters from the vaccinated sows gained significantly more weight than the litter of the control group from day 0 to day 28. The whole cell bacterin elicited peak immune response two weeks after the initial vaccination. No adverse clinical effects were developed in the safety test in sows and piglets. Finally, the autogenous, whole cell bacterin can mount a protective immune response, reduce the clinical effects of AR and provide a significant weight gain in piglets
