Microsporogenesis in two alloplasmic isonuclear strains of tobacco Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Zamojska 4 with the cytoplasms of N. knightiana Goodspeed and N. raimondii Macbride

The development of male microspores was studied in two alloplasmic strain of Nicotiana tabacum cv. Zamojska 4 with the cytoplasm of the species N. knightiana and N. raimondii. The maximum number of univalents and the frequency of PMC's containing unpaired chromosomes were higher in the alloplasmic strains included sporadic chromatin bridges and two daughter nuclei after the completion of the 2nd reduction division. In the strain with N. raimondii cytoplasm microspore development collapsed at the tetrad stage which was the first case of this kind in tobacco. An analogue with N. knightiana cytoplasm formed apparently normal, binucleate, acetocarmine-stainable pollen grains only 4 percent of which were capable of germination on a sucrose medium
