Fertigation: corn response to nitrogen fertilizers

Nitrogen fertilization related to fertigation frequencies with different N-sources and dosis was carried out and their influence on crop production and nutrient uptake using corn (Zea mays) as a classical example was studied. Data obtained revealed that the intermediate application dose of 140 kg/ha was the most convenient one since, in general it resulted in a corn yield production more or less equal to that of 210 kg/ha N dose with a notable increase with respect to the low one of 70 kg/ha. Moreover, the data showed that whatever the N-source or the rate at which it was applied, a greater improvement in the yield production as well as in the plant growing parameters was achieved with the short application frequencies rather than the long once. This was also true for the plant uptake of both P and K. The nitrogen use efficiency calculation clearly confirmed that among fertigated treatments, the highest efficiencies were obtained from those where nitrogen was distributed at the same frequencies as those of irrigation.
