Wheat production in paddy fields [Thailand]

Department of Agricultural Extension initiated a wheat production on-farm testing and promotion project in 1984. Results to date show that high-potential wheat growing exist in loamy soils which are well drained. The Wheat-Barley Zoning Working Group has identified 192,789 rais of irrigated paddy field land suitable for wheat in the upper northern region including areas in; Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Prae, Nan, Lamphoon, Lamphang and Mae Hongsorn. A survery of farmers participation in the wheat project in 1988/89 show that some farms yield more than 250 kg/rai. Production costs are 658 bath/rai. Since a guaranteed price of 5.50 baht/kg, the "break-even" level is 120 kg/rai. At present only a few farmers can gain such high yield, because of a limiting form of cultivation errors : late planting, over irrigation, high seed rate, shallow seeding, wide spacing, and low rate of chemical fertilizer, but the farmers who have grown wheat for 2 seasons are learning to follow extension recommendations and are also able to adapt cultivation methods based on their own experience and understanding. Successful farmers are thus achieving higher yields at lower costs of production.
