Effect of cooked cassava in urea containing feed supplement on the production and composition of milk in goats

Eighteen lactating Etawah Crossbred goats with bodyweights between 15.00 to 15.75 kg. were used in this study utilizing a complete randomized design. The treatments were fresh elephant grass as the sole diet (ration Ra), elephant grass supplemented with raw-casava containing urea based concentrate (ration Rb), and elephant grass supplement with cooked-cassava (heat-moisture treated) containing urea based concentrate (ration Rc). Ration Ra, ration Rb, ration Rc respectively cause changes in the following parameters of milk: Milk production 111.44a, 119.50b and 122.19b g/animal/day. Fat content 4.89, 4.92 and 5.33 %. Protein content 3.86a, 4.24a and 4.89b %. Lactose content 2.50, 2.57 and 2.65 %. Dry matter content 14.86a, 15.43a and 17.45b %. Non-fat DM 9.97a, 10.51a and 12.07b %. Specific gravity 1.0337a, 1.0357a and 1.0419b. Except for milk production, no significant difference are found between treatments ration Ra and ration Rb on all parameters measured. Figures on a horizontal line with different superscripts (a, b) differ significantly (P0.05). Cooked-cassava, compared to raw-casava in the urea containing feed supplement significantly improves the utilization of this carbohydrate source for milk production in goats.
