Path-coefficient analysis of yield and yield components in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) [in Bangladesh]

The nature and extent of direct and indirect effects of yield components on yield of twenty two varieties/lines of wheat (T. aestivum L.) were estimated through path analysis. Ear length had the highest direct contribution to grain yield/plant which was followed by days to heading, 1000 grain weight and number of grains/ear. The direct influence of plant height and days to maturity were high and negative. The number of ears/plant also showed negative but negligible direct effect. Plant height, number of ears/plant and grains/ear had very high indirect contribution to yield through ear length. The indirect contributions of number of ears/plant, plant height, ear length and days to maturity and that of days to maturity via days to heading were also high. It is therefore, obvious that ear length, 1000 grain weight and grains/ear were the main contributors of grain yield. However, for improving grain yield consideration should also be given to days to heading and number of ears/plant.
