[Importance of recreational fishery and of captures in two ship-canals]

The impact of the recreational fishery (angling) on the fish population was assessed in two Belgian canals. The importance of the angling was estimated by counting the number of anglers along the banks. The number of fish caught per angling-hour was estimated by interviews of the anglers and by creel surveys. An estimate of the annual catch and the annual harvest was done for the two most abundant species of the community: the roach (Rutilus rutilus L.) and the bream (Abramis brama L.). The annual angling pressure is estimated at 4000 and 6700 angling-hour per hectare, respectively in the two canals. The annual catch in the first canal is estimated at 3 629 roach per hectare and the harvest corresponding to the portion of the catch effectively removed from the fish population by the anglers, is estimated at only 392 roach per hectare (8.1 kg per hectare). Roach harvest corresponds to about 3 percent of the roach population of this canal. In the second canal, roach harvest is estimated at 912 roach per hectare (7 percent of the roach population; 42.4 kg per hectare). The values for the bream harvest are respectively 111 bream per hectare (8 percent of the bream population, 28 kg per hectare and 53 bream per hectare (11 percent of the population, 13.9 kg per hectare)
