Evolution of relationships between tomato plants and Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici in Ticino [Switzerland]

The evolution of virulence of Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici (Fol) was studied in one tomato growing region of Southern Switzerland from 1990 to 1994. Tomato cultivars with F1 resistance showed Fusarium wilt all over the period of the trial. The susceptibility of cultivars with F2 resistance progressively increased, so that all F2 cultivars showed wilt symptoms in 1994. Fol isolates from F2 cultivars were not pathogenic to cultivars Recento and Corella with F2 resistance in inoculation experiments. This suggests that these isolates do not belong to a new race. Fusarium wilt occurring on F2 cultivars in the practice is probably due to mixed infections with Meloidogyne sp. or Pyrenochaeta lycopersici, which break the resistance to Fol
