A new groundsel threatens our vineyards [Switzerland]

A Composite of the Sececio genus was observed near the railway station of Denges (Switzerland). This groundsel comes from Southern Africa and is therefore called South African groundsel or Cap groundsel. In 1994 it is mentioned for the first time in the Swiss flora (Aeschimann and Burdet, 1994) under the name of Senecio inaequidens DC. It is described as rare but in expansion. Obviously it is now colonising the northern part of the Swiss Alps. This plant appears to be perfectly adapted to the Geneva lake region of La Cote, althoughit has not invaded the crop areas yet. S. inaequidens presents all the characteristics of an invader plant that might extend its area and become a true weed. Its spread ought to be observed in the future
