The efficacy of the new ensiling additives available in Switzerland to promote the main fermentation was tested. The trials were carried out in small-scale silos using a mixture of lucerne and cocksfoot at two different dry matter levels (20 and 26 % dry matter). Out of the 13 new products six proved to be efficient when used in forages difficult to ensile. For forages with better ensiling qualities eleven products showed a good efficacy. One product proved inefficient on forages difficult to ensile, another one on forages with average ensiling qualities. The other products showed sufficient efficacy. Further testings showed exact spreading of the additives to be decisive for a good fermentation quality
