[Productive and reproductive performance of a flock of Suffolk sheep]

The objectives of this research were: to establish the quantitative effect of weaning weight and type of birth on body weight and reproductive traits; to establish quantitative effects of weaning weight of the sheep on birth weight and weaning weight on its progeny and to quantify the effect of the weight at parturition and the type of parturition in subsequent reproductive performance, as well as the effect of weight at mating on parturition of same year. For this purpose, between 522 and 1115 females, were used. The animals which were the heaviest at weaning went on being the heaviest up to the third mating and the lightest ones made equal to the superior group at the second parturition. The animals which were born single were heavier than those born twins throughout life. That difference decreased with the age of the animal. The effects of weaning weight and type of birth produced no marked differences on reproductive traits. The weaning weight of the female had no marked influence on the weight at birth and at weaning of the progeny. The animals with better than average weights at parturition were those with better reproductive efficiencies and the females born twins were more prolific in subsequent parturition. Those animals which had lower weight at mating showed less fertility, were less prolific and produced less kilos at weaning
