Results from the present study illustrated that the empty-shell chestnuts were formed due to the cease of division of the primary endosperm nucleus, so the latter were unable to develop into normal endosperm, and that the fertilized ova were lacking in essential nutrients. It was estimated that the content of soluble protein and the activities of catalase and peroxide isozyme were lower in involucre and ovary of empty-shell chestnuts than in those of normal ones. Experiment proved that, nutrient supplying through leaf-spraying during the stages of early embryo sac, fertilization, and earlly embryogenesis was efficient for preventing the occurrence of empty-shell chestnuts
