Ideal soil and constraints of soil cover
1994
Kolli, R. (Estonian Agricultural University, Tartu (Estonia). Department of Soil of Science.)
In the climatic conditions of Estonia the so-called ideal soil is characterized by rich in humus crumbly-granular weakly acid or neutral, biologically active, relatively thick (28-35 cm) loamy epipedon (humus cover), which is underlain (to the depeth of 1,5 m) by well-drained calcareous loam with a small content of coarse fragments. Such kind of soils in Estonia are Leached (Cambisols) and Lessive soils (Luvisols). To some extent some soils (Podzoluvisols) correspond to these parametres. One limiting factor for the Estonian soils is their temperature regime, which is classified as frigid according to the global system. The suitability of soils for management is reflected by their grouping into three agro-groups of arable lands (A - well suitable for intensive cropping; B - moderately suitable, having severe limitations, which reduce the choice of crops; C - suitable for grasslands)
