An experiment was set up in 1991 to determine the effects of cessation of fertiliser and reduced grazing on the species composition of predominantly ryegrass/agrostis/white clover swards. Productive swards received fertiliser applications of 140 Kg N/ha (and P and K in compound) and were maintained at 4 cm while extensively managed swards received no fertiliser and were maintained at sward heights of either 4 cm or 8 cm. There were differences in leaf dynamics between species and in their response to treatments. Mean rates of leaf appearance were similar for all three species but agrostis maintained a higher number of green leaves than ryegrass and clover maintained on average only 2.2 green leaves/stolon (P0.001)
