Native plant-derived insecticides - one of the ways in sustainable plant protection of organic farming

In the Institute of Plant Protection of the Estonian Agricultural University the study on local pesticidal plants and their modes of action was started two years ago. Crude water extracts of seven plants - Achillea millefolium, Artemisia vulgaris, Hieracleum sosnowskyi, Ledum palustre, Matricaria indora, Prunus padus, Tanacetum vulgare - from more than twenty investigated plants, have good insecticidal properties. The extract influence depended on the concentration and on the pest feeding behaviour, age and species. All seven extracts influenced insects as direct toxicants, some of them also as growth regulators and behaviour modifiers. In vegetable growing it is possible to use pest control by treating vegetables at weekly intervals with plant extracts during the pest's flight and feeding period. All these plants with pesticidal properties are locally available and can be cheaply maintained, the only disadvantage being is a great amount of manual work
