Effect of Chemical Preservatives on the Protein Quality of Grass Silage

A number of original chemical silage preservatives have been worked out in Estonia during the last decade. In the present experiment the changes of protein during ensiling process were studied. The objective of work was to compare the efficiency of the following Estonian preservatives: Siloben (30-35 per cent solution of Na-benzoate), Superben (39 per cent urotropinr + benzoic acid), Ester-3 (12 per cent fromalin-urea complex + 30 per cent acetic acid), and KS-5 (benzoic acid + urotropine + NaNO2). The herbage for ensiling experiments was obtained from the first cutting of red clover (Trifolium pratense) and timothy (Phleum pratense) mixture (45 per cent clover), and from the first and third cuttings of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiforum). The quality of all silages, where the preservatives were used was good and the degradation of protein (proportion of NH4-N in total-N) during silage fermentation was quite small. All the changes occurring in N-fraction of herbage during ensiling depend on preservatives only in some text. In silages where Superben or KS-5 were used, the content of NH4 in total N was essentially higher than by Siloben and Ester-3, but it must be taken into consideration, that Superben and KS-5 contain urotropine, what will be degraded to NH3 during fermentation
