On the assessment of herd immunity in animals
1994
Pavel, Ue. | Viltrop, A. (Estonian Agricultural University, Tartu (Estonia))
The main genetic aspects of the infection resistance and acquired immunity in animal populations, i.e. herd immunity are discussed. The importance of the microbial factor variability in the system of host-microorganism and the necessity of the assessment of herd immunity in animals are emphasized. An original approach for the determination of phenotypic endurance index in the cattle is proposed. It is based on the assessment of the longevity (Lon), cell-mediated immunity by the skin test to phytohemagglutinini (PHA), and the blood serum total protein content (Prn) as following: 3 Lon+2PHA+Prn
