Effect of feeding intensity on the performance characteristics of pig
1994
Jaksa, E.
In a Hungarian performance testing centre the author investigated the fattening ability and carcass composition of pigs which were fed ad libitum. After slaughter, the total meat content was determined by deboning the carcasses. Data obtained in this manner were very near to the reference lean content as established according to the EUROP system. According to the author, the assessment of the one day increase in the weight of lean furnishes a more adequate index for the meat performance of the animals than that of the live weight increase during fattening. It is assumed that, if the pigs were fed separately, according to sex, the lean content could be grown by 0.5 %. Prediction equations are also presented for assessing, with acceptable accuracy, the lean content by measuring the weight of the skinned, defatted carcass (without head and feet) or by measuring the weight of the primal cuts
