Dynamics and food of Neogobius fluviatilis (Pisces, Gobiidae) in Lake Balaton (Hungary)

Neogobius fluviatilis (Pall.), a Ponto-Caspic goby appeared in the shallow Lake Balaton in 1970. Since its first appearance this species reproduced successively and, at present, has a dense population. New records prove its continuous spread over the drainage systems of rivers (Danube, Tisza). According to recent investigations carried out on the littoral zone, this goby plays an important role in the periohytic/benthic food-webs as an energy mediator. No data were available concerning its biology in the new habitat. This paper summarizes the now observation concerning the dynamics and food consumption of Neogobius populations in Lake Balaton.
