Rice leaf tissue nitrogen analysis using near infrared reflectance

Leaf nitrogen (N) is an important input in many crop physiological studies - crop growth analysis, crop N uptake and use efficiency, and crop modeling for potential yield. The traditional wet method of tissue N analysis is slow and very labor intensive, hence, limits the capacity for intensive data gathering and analysis. The near infrared reflectance (NIR) method of N analysis is fast, requires no chemical preparation and skilled labor, and therefore a good alternative for estimating N content in the leaf. Dried rice leaf samples were collected and analyzed for N using Kjeldahl method. The same samples were analyzed using the Inframatic 8620 NIR analyzer, an instrument popular for analyzing the composition of food products. Preliminary results showed that NIR gave a very good correlation (R = 0.99) with the Kjeldahl analysis and the derived calibration line showed a new perfect 1:1 relationship
