Detailed measurements on IR72 showed that panicle initiation was the best growth stage to assess C-assimilation. A highly significant correlation between daily canopy photosynthesis and net leaf carbohydrate content (r square = 0.99) was observed while both these factors gave an r square = 0.99 with daily irradiance. In all five cultivars, daily irradiance was better correlated with carbohydrates in leaves than stem carbohydrates. Percentage soluble sugars gave better correlation with radiation than percentage starch. Within one cultivar correlation of quantum versus leaf soluble sugars or canopy photosynthesis was highly significant (r square = 0.7-1.0). Across cultivars the correlation was lower (r square = 0.6) but still significant. These results prove that net soluble sugar content of leaves at panicle initiation can be used to quantify daily carbon assimilation rates. Relating leaf soluble sugar content with daily radiation data can accurately estimate photosynthetic efficiency
