Conservation tillage technology in corn (Zea mays L.) using glyphosate plus ammonium sulphate

Zero and minimum tillage using glyphosate plus ammonium sulphate (Trade name:Power) is a practical, cost and time savings, highly feasible and easy to manage sustainable technology to enhance corn production, based on a study conducted in Bukidnon [Philippines] last dry season, 1995. Weed frequency was slightly higher under zero/conventional systems although this did not correspond to increased weed weight because majority of the weeds present were young and newly-emerged. Higher grass and broadleaf weed compositions were observed under farmers and conventional tillage practices, respectively. Plant height and stover yield were significantly higher in zero/minimum tillage systems than in farmers practice. Likewise, marketable yield was either similar or higher in zero/minimum tillage than in farmers practice. The remarkable increase in plant height, stover and marketable ear yield can be attributed to a confluence of factors among others, improved soil condition due to non-to-minimal disturbance by plowing and harrowing, enhanced organic weed/stubble debris residue in the topsoil after power application thereby conserving moisture, and long-term one application weed control
