The stripper-gatherer (SG) system of harvesting and threshing was developed by the International Rice Research Inst. (IRRI) and Silsoe Research Inst. in US to meet the need for labor-saving harvest technology in small rice areas where labor shortage occurs at harvest time. It has been estimated that SG will result to a reduction in harvesting and threshing labor by about 17 person days per hectare. However, this estimate did not consider the social cost of labor displacement and the benefits and costs of adopting the system. A comprehensive economic evaluation is currently being done to assess the private profitability of the system at the farm level. The current estimates of the initial cost of investment amounts to about P90,000 with a life span of only five years. Farm level data on labor use for manual harvesting and threshing versus mechanical harvesting and threshing by SG system will be used to analyze the social cost of labor displaced to the adoption of the SG system of harvesting and threshing
