Alley cropping in sloping upland rice areas of Cavite [Philippines]

One strategy to control soil erosion and sustain productivity of sloping land grown to upland rice is the use of alley cropping. Double strips of Desmodium rensonii, Desmanthus virgatus and Flemingia macrophylla and no hedgerows as farmers practice were the four treatments applied, respectively in a farmer's field with slope of 15-17 percent. Cumulative soil loss was determined every after wet season cropping using pin-method, Rice-cowpea, peanut were the cropping pattern tested in every alley. Grain yield of rice for the 1990 and 1991 wet season cropping was not significantly affected by hedgerows treatments, while in 1992 wet season trial, grain yield and fodder yield of UPLRi-5 was affected by hedgerow treatments. No significant differences was noted on the yield parameters of cowpea and peanut as affected by the hedgerow treatments. The lowest soil eroded was observed in plots with F. macrophylla with a mean of 61.44 cu m/ha and 23.19 cu m/ha for 1991 and 1992 wet season cropping respectively
