The paper presents the use of conventional and non-conventional breeding approaches in developing an improved garlic cultivar. Colchicine treatment successfully induced genetic variability as shown by the frequency of euploid and aneuploid cells. On the other hand, evaluation of 83 clonal selections for resistance to root rot/bulb rot identified 22 resistant clones which showed no infection. Biochemical analysis of 12 cultivars revealed that the variety from Chiang Mai [Thailand] exhibited the highest mole pyruvic acid/g fresh weight which indicates a high level of pungency. Its level of pungency however, was not significantly different with Tan Bolters
