Correlation analysis, path-coefficient analysis and stepwise regression analysis were used to determine criteria of indirect selection based on yield components in a set of diallel crosses derived from 6 wheat varieties. The genetic correlation coefficients of number of spikes per plant, 100 grain weight and plant height with grain yield were positive and significant. Path analysis showed highest direct effect of number of spikes per plant (0.6601) followed by number of grains per spike (0.6024) and 100 grain weight (0.3279). The results of stepwise regression analysis indicated that 66.66, 19.53 and 12.77 percent of the variability in grain yield could be attributed due to number of spikes per plant, number of grains per spike and 100 grain weight, respectively. Simultaneous selection for these traits in order of their importance could be recommended to select for high yielding plants.
