Four hybrids of different 4x-triticales and R4 self-compatible rye line were back-crossed to 2x-rye as both female and male parents. Seed setting was compared for cross combinations, selfed and open-pollinated hybrids and between plants grown from irradiated and non-irradiated seeds. Male and female fertility was much differentiated, depending on 4x-triticale genotype as well as on rye back-cross partner. The most male-strile hybrid showed the best female fertility. The F1 form with the best developed and bursting pollen sacks was not the most successful as a male parent. 70 Gy gamma-irradiation of F1 dry seeds caused about 30 percent decrease in seed setting in the aequation back-crosses
