Polish and foreign varieties of sugar beet were compared on the field plantation in 1993. Plant establishment and healthiness were recorded and losses of yield caused by Aphanomyces cochlioides damping-off were calculated. The number of plants attacked by this fungus varied from 0 (Zenith) to 18.6 percent for the untreated with Tachigaren 70 WP Wiahill variety. The losses of some varieties in plant population were high. The average number of infected plants amounted to 5.3 percent and root losses were 4.7 t/ha (about 6.3 percent). Evident reduction of infected plants by A. cochlioides was observed in the case when pesticide - Counter 5G was applied into the soil
