Socioeconomic research issues on wet seeding

Compared with transplanting, wet seeding is a labor-saving method of establishing rice. Increasing opportunity costs of farm labor with economic growth will be one of the main factors to induce farmers to adopt labor-saving methods in agriculture. Thus where agroclimatic and hydrological conditions permit, shifts in rice establishment method from transplanting to wet seeding to dry seeding as wage rates increase can be expected. In irrigated areas, this tendency is likely to be reinforced by increased cost of irrigation arising from increased industrial and urban demand for water. The paper provides an overview of socioeconomic factors that are likely to determine changes in rice establishment practices in Asian countries. Likely effects of changes in crop establishment methods on agricultural labor market, women's employment, intensification of land use, and mechanization are examined. Implications of these changes on policy reform and technology design are discussed
