Ecology of the European Pochard (Aythya ferina) in the upper reaches of the Yuzhny Bug river, Western Ukraine
1995
Gulaj, V.I.
Ecology of the European Pochard is outlined as a result of studies in Khmelnitskaya Region, Western Ukraine in 1963-1989. Clutch size is 8.00 +- 0.28 eggs. About 91 % of ducklings fledge. The species number dynamics is characterized by large fluctuations with periods of long depressions. Drakes exceed females in number 3.5 - 4 times in spring, but only females and broods remain in August. In years of number depression (1972-1984) up to 60.3 % of European Pochards were withdrawn from the population annually by hunters, but this was only 3 % of their bag. Measures for rational use and protection of the population stock are proposed
