Study on harvest indices, precooling, packaging and storage of okra pods (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench)

Study on growth of okra pods cv. OK no.2 on the main stem at day 1-12 after full bloom during March to June 1989 showed that the growth pattern of the pods followed the simple sigmoidal curve. Soluble solids contents in the pericarp and seed, titratable acidity and fiber content in pericarp were increased, while vitamin C content and pectin content were decreased as the pods became mature. Okra pods of day 4-5 after full bloom were the optimum stage of maturity for harvesting. Pods at these stage were 6.23-9.54 cm length and had greater soluble solids in seeds and ascorbic acid in pericarp than other stages. Pods at these stages on node position no. 1-15 were better than those on node position no. 16-30 and 31-45 respectively. Okra pods in foam trays wrapped with PVC film retained more freshness and longer storage life than those packed in nylon nets and placed into corrugated boxes and packed directly in corrugated boxes. Nonprecooled pods stored at 10 deg C had the longest storage life. Pods left at room temperature for 1 hour resulted in less weigth loss and longer storage life. Pods transported at 15 deg C retained more freshness than other treatments.
