Indirect selection of seed weight in sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) by using capsule size

Experiment was conducted to evaluate the use of pod size for indirect selection of seed weight in sesame (Sesamum indicum L.). Three crosses were made between three small and three large seed lines in this study. Pod width, pod length and 1,000 seed weight of parental lines and a check variety (Mahasarakam 60) and their progenies for the F1, F2 and F3 of all crosses were measured on individual plants. Selection for seed weight by using pod size was more probably effective than direct selection by using 1,000 seed weight. The genetic correlations based on variance component between pod width, pod length and 1,000 seed weight were 0.794 ** and 0.491**, respectively and phenotypic correlations were 0.656** and 0.454**, respectively. Heritabilities based on variance component estimates for pod width, pod length and 1,000 seed weight were 0.431, 0.764 and 0.688 respectively. F3 lines from direct and indirect selections in F2 plants had the same range of 1,000 seed weight. Number of F3 lines which had 1,000 seed weight greater than selection criteria were also not different between direct and indirect selections. Pod width was considered to be more efficient selection for seed weight than pod length because the path coefficient analysis showed that direct effect of pod width (0.609) was greater than pod length (0.425).
