Effect of spraying monopotassium phosphate fertilizer on flowering and nutritional contents in the shoot of two lychee cultivars

Percent flowering was increased in 'Hong Huay' receiving high rate of application. Panicle emergence was also enhanced by one week with larger size, both in width and in length. A positive correlation (r=0.94*) was found between monopotassium phosphate concentrations and flowering percentage. TN content was higher in the leaves than in the stem and the level was decreased after the application and reached the lowest at the time just prior to panicle emergence. In the 'O-Hia' a negative correlation (r=-0.59) was found between flowering and high rate of application. Leaf TN in the control trees was lower whereas TNC content was higher than those in the treated trees. The P contents in stem and leaf was increased after the application in both cultivars. No specific pattern of K content was obtained in both cultivars. The TNC/TN ratio in leaf after the fertilizer application and leaf TN at the time of emergence was found to be directly related to flowering in both cultivars. Precipitation, at the time prior to emergence, could be the reason to level up TN content in the low flowering trees.
