Effect of seed vigor on field emergence, growth and yield of field corn [Zea mays]

High vigor seeds of Suwan 1 and Suwan 2602 field corn showed higher field emergence percentage than the medium and low vigor seeds. Suwan 1 and Suwan 2602 corn planted from high vigor seeds were higher in plant height and plant dry weight than those planted from the medium and low vigor seed lots, respectively. Advantages in growth and development were found at early growth stage until 56 days after planting. Eventhough the leaf area at 50 % silking was not different among those planted from different vigor seed lot, but early flowering date and higher in shelling percentage was found in the corn populations planted from the high vigor seed lot. Suwan 1 and Suwan 2602 corn planted from the high vigor seed lot gave higher grain yield than those planted from the medium and low vigor seeds, respectively. If the seeds are high in vigor, they should be planted at the rate of one seed per hill at the spacing of 75x25 cm or 2 seeds per hill at the spacing of 75x50 cm. But if the seeds are low in vigor, maximum grain yield should be obtained from the seeding rate of 3 seeds per hill at the spacing of 75x25 cm and after thinning out left only on healthy plant or 3 seeds per hill at the spacing of 75x50 cm and after thinning out left only two plants. Suwan 2602 corns are higher in field emergence percentages, as well as early growth and development as determined by plant height and plant dry matter accumulation than Suwan 1 corns. However there was no significant different in leaf area and final grain yield. Lastly, planted corn under irrigated condition get higher grain yield than the non-irrigated, rainfed condition.
