Soil acidity as affected by salt in sandy soils of Northeast Thailand

Two sandy soils, a slightly acid Re soil (pH 6.2) (Roi-Et series) and a weakly acid Ki soil (pH 5.60) (Kula-Ronghai series) were examined in their acidity and Al content as a function of NaCl concentration. Re soil appeared to permit nitrification when it was NaCl-free. However, this soil became acid and did not allow nitrification even when it was affected with NaCl of low concentrations. The amount of exchangeable Al+3 in both soils was small and Al content in their soil solutions was considered to be lower than that in the acid soils in temperate regions. This was especially noticeable for Ki soil. In addition, most of the Al in the NaCl free Ki soil appeared to be complexed with harmless fulvic acid. Al-toxicity in some sandy acid soils in Northeastern Thailand and probably in tropical regions in general, was not serious: Liming may not be given a preference in ameliorating these soils over fertilization.
