Histological and fine structure of the digestive system in giant catfish (Pangasianodon gigas Chevey)

Giant catfish, aged 6 months, had dentine like teeth embedded in maxilla and mandible which were not found in the other specimens. The stomach consisted of cardiac and pyloric portion. The cardiac region was the glandular part of the stomach. Muscularis mucosae, a thin smooth muscular layer was found only in the stomach of the giant catfish. The intestinal tract was grossly divided into the anterior, middle and posterior parts. Giant catfish's liver was classified as hepatopancreas. The liver cells were arranged in lamina with 2 cells thickness. They consisted of pigments. The exocrine pancreatic cells surrounded the large vessels and bile ducts except the central vein. The endocrine portion was found in the mesentery. The gall bladder had simple cuboidal epithelial lining. The tunica muscularis of the gall bladder was circularly arranged into single layer. The pneumatic duct was similar to the esophagus but it had the larger foldings and simple cuboidal epithelium. The swim bladder had the thick wall which consisted of tunica interna and tunica externa. The epithelial lining was simple squamous type.
