Effects of light intensity and light quality on growth and some constituents in Aloe vera Linn.

Under 25 % light intensity, chlorophyll content in the leaves was highest (94 microg/g fresh weight). The length of leaves and the weight of stems were also maximum, being 27.2 and 30.68 cm, respectively. Perimeter at the middle of the leaves was lowest. Number of leaves and plantlets, fresh weight of plantlets, percentage of gel, as well as phenolic compounds and aloin contents were found to be lowest. Under 58 % light intensity, the perimeter at the middle of the leaves was highest (5.23 cm). Number of leaves was maximum. Total fresh weight and the fresh weight of the plantlets were highest, being 354.85 g and 28.4 g, repectively. Aloe gel was highest (52.5 %). Under 100 % light intensity, the plants produced the highest number of plantlets (12.50), the maximal content of phenolic compounds (26.50 micro g/ml of gel solution) and aloin (101.75 micro g/ml of yellow sap). Length of leaves, total fresh weight and chlorophyll contents were lowest. Under blue light, the chlorophyll content of the leaves was highest (53 micro g/g fresh weight). Phenolic compound aloin was also highest, being 16.50 micro g/g of gel solution and 13.25 micro g/ml of yellow sap, respectively. Under red and white light, chlorophyll content as well as phenolic compound content was not different but the aloin content under white light appeared to be higher than those under red light.
