Duck raising in the Upper Northern Part of Thailand
1988
Pairoj Chaisomtragule
This investigation included ducks farms in the Upper Northern part of Thailand. There were 28, 6, 2, 2, 2 and 1 duck farms in Chiangmai , Phayoa, Chiangrai, Lamphun, Uttaradit and Phrae. The member of ducks in each farm ranged between 200 to 4,000 ducks, with an average of 1,015 ducks per farm. Most farmers received only primary education. Most farms did not employ any labour except some large farms. They were located near natural water resources or near the rice field. Farmers most commonly raised hybrid ducks from Khaki Campbell and native female. Duck feeding depended mainly on mixed feeds in wet or mash form. The main problems of duck production were the lack of knowledge and capital to improve duck raising efficiency, the competition of chicken farms, as well as occasional surplus of duck eggs from the central provinces of Thailand. The common needs of duck producers were better production techniques, low interest rate and long-term credits.
