Series of experiments were conducted on several sesame varieties to determine the growth pattern, internal structure of the seed shattering and non-shattering, the heredity trait of non-shattering varieties for guideline in sesame breeding program. All varieties in the study were indeterminate type. Flowering period ranged from 35 to 47 days and height increased during flowering ranged from 32 to 91 centimeters. The internal structure of non-shattering capsule had more perenchyma layers in mesocarp than the shattering one. The non-shattering characteristic was controlled by one pair of recessive gene. In comparison among eleven F6 lines from crossing between shattering and non-shattering varieties with Roi Et 1 and Mahasarakhum 60, yield performance of all varieties was not significantly different. Shattering of sesame capsule was categorized into 5 types depending on the degree of shattering from: 1=non-shattering to 5=completely shattering. Only shattering type 1, 2 and 3 were suitable for the sesame breeding program. These varieties showed the potential for developing the characteristics of delay harvesting approximately 2 weeks and 20 % increase in yield.
