Effect of nitrate and ammonium forms of nitrogen on some constituents in Aloe vera L.

Nitrogen in the forms of nitrate and ammonium showed no different effect on growth of aloe plants grown in sand but showed a different effect on growth of those grown hydroponically; nitrogen in the form of nitrate promoted while nitrogen in the form of ammonium had no effect on the growth. Both forms of nitrogen did not make a significant difference in sugar and protein contents in aloe plants grown in sand but nitrogen in the form of nitrate tended to give a higher chlorophyll content than did nitrogen in the form of ammonium while nitrogen in the form of ammonium tended to give higher contents of aloin and phenolic compound than did nitrogen in the form of nitrate. Form of nitrogen did not make a significant difference in sugar and aloin content in aloe plants grown hydroponically but nitrogen in the form of nitrate gave higher contents of chlorophyll and protein than nitrogen in the form of ammonium while nitrogen in the form of ammonium gave a higher phenolic content than did nitrogen in the form of nitrate. Nigrogen in the form of nitrate mixed with ammonium in the ratio of 1:1 gave the highest protein content in aloe plants grown hydroponically but did not exert a pronounced effect on fresh weight and on contents of chlorophylls, sugar, aloin and phenolic compound in aloe plants grown both in sand hydroponically. Aloe plant grown in sand and solely treated with water gave higher contents of sugar and phenolic compound than did the plants treated with nitrogen whereas those grown hydroponically in water gave lower contents of both constituents than did the plants treated with nitrogen.
