The objective of the investigation discussed in this paper was to study direct and indirect effects of stay green, lodging, number of days before silking and grain moisture content on grain yield. The study included S1 progenies of two synthetic maize populations. Positive and highly significant direct effects of stay green on grain yield in both populations were found. The percentage of lodged plants showed positive and number of days before silking negative, highly significant direct effect on grain yield. Negative, highly significant effects of grain moisture on grain yield was found in the population NS 140, while the population NS 103 had weak, non-significant effect. Indirect effects of grain moisture on grain yield via other traits were significant in the population NS 103.
