Inheritance of grain yield, popping volume and traits important for quality of popcorn (Zea mays L. everta)

Two hybrids with a common parent were used in this study. Grain yield and traits related to yield are, first of all, determined by dominant gene effects. Dominant gene effects were also prevalent in other traits. Additive gene effects were significant but multiple lower than dominant gene effects. The number of kernel rows per ear is the exception, as additive gene effects were as significant as dominant gene effects or even more significant. The additive dominant model was acceptable only in two traits - the number of kernel rows per ear and dimensions of flakes (flake size). The existence of non-allelic interaction, first of all, among dominant genes was determined for majority of traits. Epistasis among dominant genes was duplicate type. In case when epistasis among additive genes was significant then it was, also, of duplicate type, otherwise it was of complementary type. Interaction of basic gene effects with environment was detected in all cases but in the number of kernel rows per ear and popcorn size.
