Amaranthus - the alternative fodder crop for silage production under drought conditions

Crops were grown on chernozem without irrigation. The year in which the experiment was conducted was dry. The silage roughage was harvested in the stage of milk-wax maturity of seed. Ensiling was done in laboratory jags, and after two months period the chemical composition was analysed. Amaranthus crops gave satisfactory yields of dry matter (14.73 t/ha and 13.14 t/ha). Amaranthus biomass has a higher protein content than maize. Yet both amaranthus species could be ensiled successfully. The results indicate that Amaranthus may be an alternative high protein silage crop, but could not replace maize if high energetic value of silage is required.
