Effect of conserving lucerne with different dry matter content. [A short version of master thesis]

The effect of wilting, addition of bacterial inoculants or maize meal on chemical composition and microflora of lucerne silages was studied. Wilting increased the percentage of dry matter and all nutrients, particularly NFE. In silages made from wilted material the increased content of organic matter, crude protein and NFE was found, but less lipids, while higher pH values and higher production of acetic and lactic acid were found. In silages with added inoculant the increased amount of crude protein and lipids, and smaller amount of NFE are found, but also with the increased production of acetic and lactic acid and lower pH values. Addition of maize meal increased the percentage of organic matter and NFE and decreased percentage of crude fiber and mineral content, while no effect was observed on silage quality. The investigated factors had small influence on silage microflora.
