Photoinhibition and light acclimation in seedlings of telsur (Hopea odorata) [in Bangladesh]

The potential for light acclimation in shade grown seedlings of telsur (Hopea odorata Roxb.) was examined. The seedlings were grown under a simulated forest shade, and after transfer to a higher light level, chlorophyll fluorescence induction kinetics, net photosynthesis, and changes in chlorophyll and anatomy were examined in leaves that were fully developed prior to the transfer. The low-light leaf displayed photoinhibition immediately after transfer to the high light. This photoinhibition was substantial, and continued for several days. Chlorophyll bleaching occurred only after a certain degree of photoinhibition had proceeded, and a change in appearance from dark green to light green was visually observed in the photoinhibited leaves. Recovery commenced immediately after severe photoinhibition. During acclimation to the high light, leaf weight per unit area was increased and chlorophyll b content decreased. After 35 d of transfer, the net photosynthetic rate was not significantly less than those staying in the low light. No significant change in leaf thickness and stomatal density was observed. The transferred seedlings produced thicker leaves with thicker palisade layer and higher amounts of chlorophyll per unit leaf area, and retained the photoinhibited leaves till the end of the experiment. The results suggest that the fully expanded shade leaf has a wide acclimation plasticity.
