Adoption level of high yielding variety of mustard in some selected areas of Bangladesh

This study makes an assessment about the extent of adoption, ascertains the reasons for increase or decrease in cultivable land and solicits farmers' opinion regarding future expansion of high yielding variety of mustard. Ishurdi, Chuadanga, Dhamrai and Brahmanbaria thana under Pabna, Chuadanga, Dhaka and Brahmanbaria districts, respectively, were chosen purposively for this study. Out of the total cultivated land, high yielding variety of mustard (SS-75) were grown in roughly 54% of the land, while local variety (Tori-7) was planted in 42% area and the rest (4%) was covered by Sampad. The land which is being brought under HYV cultivation is increasing day by day, while it is the opposite for local varieties. Seventy four percent of the farmers have increased their cultivable lands and cultivated Sonali Sharisha. Higher profit, yield and oil content have inspired farmers to go for HYV varieties. Almost all the farmers were eager to increase their lands for cultivating Sonali Sharisha in the near future. The average yield of Sonali Sharisha was 1169 kg/ha, Sampad 679 kg/ha and Tori-7 605 kg/ha.
