The bio-efficacy of carbohydrase enzymes in poultry nutrition

A series of balance trials was conducted to evaluate carbo (NSP) multi-enzyme preparations from Novo Nordisk A/S in relation with different specific target feedstuffs (cereals, cereal byproducts and protein sources) in broiler chickens and laying hens as well. In general, enzyme supplementation resulted in an increase of dietary ME(n)-content; thereby the response depended on (1) composition of the enzyme cocktail, (2) type of the target feedstuff and (3) age of the bird. The MEn-response was nearly linearly related to the enzyme dose. The total increase of dietary MEn-content can mainly be explained by an increase in digestibility of both fat and amino acids. In general dietary enzyme supplementation resulted in a lower excreta/feed-ratio (reduced manure production) and an improved N-retention. The enzyme bio-efficacy can be introduced into least-cost diet formulation, in terms of MEn-units.
