Form and function of the sugar beet fibrous root system; its importance to crop productivity

The more obvious functions of the sugar-beet fibrous roots are to absorb and transport water and nutrients to the shoot and storage root. However, they also have a major regulatory role in controlling communications between different growing organs. The messages involved are probably hormonally controlled and operate from the seed germination to the seed production phases. Thus environmental influences on fibrous root activity can result in major effects on plant structure and function, yield, sugar concentration and quality. Although the ratio of fibrous root to shoot seems to be carefully regulated, there is sufficient inherent plant to plant variation to indicate opportunities for genetically manipulating fibrous root growth and allometric relationships in sugar beet.
