Influence of agronomic factors on non-conventional parameters of the internal quality of sugar beet

The content in sugar beet of marc, raffinose, reducing sugars, betain and glutamine, and inorganic phosphate play under some agronomic conditions in the northern part of European Union an important role on the technological quality of sugar beet. The marc content forms the pulp. Reducing sugars and glutamine decrease alkalinity in contrast to inorganic phosphate, which has an increasing effect. Raffinose, invert sugar and betain and glutamine are all responsible for loss of sugar in molasses. The marc content, unlike the sugar content, has decreased over the years as shown in Dutch investigations in 1976-94. Raffinose, reducing sugars, betain, glutamine and phosphate are influenced by climate, year/site, fertilization and to some extent by variety and harvesting conditions. By selection of a variety of a good quality, by correct fertilization and harvesting the growers have the possibility of improving the sugar beet quality further.
