Factors affecting the contamination of bulk milk with clostridia spores

A field study was carried out to identify the sources of contamination of bulk milk with clostridia spores. Data were collected from more than 200 farms in Sweden, regarding silage quality, clostridia content in silage and milk, and different management factors. From 15 of the farms faecal samples were also analysed for clostridia spore content. Clostridia spore content of milk correlated with the following parameters in silage: dry matter content, ammonia content, butyric acid content and clostridia content of silage. The most important factor determining the spore content of milk was found to be the spore content of faeces. Other factors related to the spore content of bulk milk were milking hygiene, application of bedding material and silage systems.
